CLIMATE, SOILS AND VARIETALS
Los Oteros is a high plateau with continental climate. Terribly hot in summer and freezing in winter. The yearly average rainfall is around 300 liters with extreme contrasts between day and night temperatures during the ripeness period.

Our 130 hectares of vineyard are located in the best areas of Los Oteros and each plot has been carefully studied by our technical team together with the professionals of the University of León. The main varietals are Prieto Picudo and Verdejo with an average age of 90 years old.

Traditionally in the area the vines used to grow like creeping plants with its branches as the only visible parts of the vines. All our vineyards are located at 810 meters above sea level on gentle slopes and hillocks with rather poor soils: mainly clay, calcareous, but also sandy, gravelly with lots of pebbles. The average yield is 1’500 kg per hectare.

VITICULTURE PROGRAM
The most natural methods are applied at each stage in the vineyards as well as in the winery in order to obtain wines with personality, but respectful of the terroir.

To get the best quality grapes, we follow a thorough viticulture program which combines the traditional know-how of our growers together with the most modern techniques, such as soil analysis and phytosanitary tests carried out by our technical team together with the University of León. Moreover, to get the best vinifying and ageing conditions, we reduce the yields with green pruning and crop thinning before the veraison (for the youngest vines) and do a careful follow-up of the oldest vineyards. Furthermore, we substitute traditional ploughing for weedkillers and minimize any spraying to respect the ecosystem.

PLOTS
Vinifying plot by plot is the method we chose in order to study the differences and therefore find exceptional plots. Our vineyards are very old (90 years old) with very deep roots, which force the vine to dig to feed itself from the subsoil. We grow each plot according to its specific needs from a soil and climate point of view.
